1. One day workshop as an outreach event for high level decision makers is to support the early efforts and to help ensure that they succeed in achieving both the Sendai Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals and targets relating to disaster risk reduction. 2. Demonstrate the best practices, ways to implement and chalk out future programmes in the region 3. Discuss a need of preparing procedural guidelines and standard operating procedure in utilization of space based and geospatial information in disaster management 4. Offer hands-on training programme to disaster management officials on flood and drought risk assessment and response 5. Awareness event dedicated for enhancing women participation in the field of space technology and associated fields of disaster management.
The workshop and capacity building is specifically planned to assist the countries in SAARC region which are mostly affected by natural disasters as per the “Asia-Pacific Disaster Report 2017 ”. The recent devastating floods sweeping across South Asia revealed nature’s destructive potential. In Bangladesh, India and Nepal flooding and landslides killed hundreds of people and caused heavy destruction to homes, schools, businesses and crops, and exposed millions to hunger and disease. Droughts and floods are now frequently occurring in the region due to impact of climate change. Although such events are shocking, these are not surprising. By building awareness and institutional capacity, the disaster management stakeholders in the region can deal with these challenges. The Sendai Framework has recognized these vulnerabilities and advocated the role of the space based and geospatial information in understanding these risks and better preparedness. The regional workshop and capacity building programme workshop, therefore, is an attempt to bring together disaster management officials and experts to chalk out a sustained plan for utilization of space technologies for achieving targets of the Sendai Framework.
