The Interim Unit  (IU) of SAARC Disaster Management Centre (SDMC), has been established under the premises of Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management (GIDM), Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India with the mandate to serve eight Member Countries of South Asia Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) - Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka by providing policy advice, facilitating capacity building services including strategic learning, research, training, system development and exchange of information for effective Disaster Risk Reduction and management in South Asia. SDMC have also taken up pioneering work of planning and implementing priorities mentioned in SAARC comprehensive framework on disaster Management and developed two knowledge sharing portals.

The Interim Unit of SAARC DMC was inaugurated by the Hon. Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri. Vijaybhai Rupani, on 24th May 2017. Hon. Minister of Disaster Management, Gujarat, Shri Dipilkumar Thakore; Chief Secretary of Gujarat, Dr J. N. Singh IAS; Additional Secretary (DM), Ministry of Home Affairs, GoI, Shri Bipin Mallick IAS; Joint Secretary (SAARC), Ministry of External Affairs, GoI, Shri Prashant Agrawal and Director SDMC (IU), Ms Anju Sharma, IAS; along with participants from the SAARC countries remained present at the inauguration ceremony.
